What’s Holding OEMs Back? Automotive Industry Trends Behind Digitalization Slowdown.
For years, the automotive industry has talked about digitalization as if the destination were already in sight. Software-defined vehicles, connected services, over-the-air updates, AI-powered features and digital manufacturing have all promised to reshape the way cars are designed, built and experienced. Yet for many US automakers, the journey has slowed.
The reason is not a lack of ambition. In fact, OEMs are investing heavily. Deloitte found that more than 90% of surveyed automotive executives are actively adopting software-defined vehicle technologies, with some OEMs allocating up to $3 billion each to related R&D. The problem is that digital transformation is proving far more complex than simply adding more software to a car.
Legacy Systems Are Hard to Leave Behind
One of the biggest barriers is the legacy architecture built into traditional automakers. Many OEMs still rely on complex networks of electronic control units, supplier-specific systems and years of embedded software. Replacing or modernizing these systems can feel like rebuilding an aircraft while it is already in flight
McKinsey notes that legacy software and electronics architectures, combined with established supplier relationships, can limit OEM agility. For established US manufacturers, the challenge is balancing innovation with reliability. Cars cannot simply be “patched later” in the same way as consumer apps when safety and regulatory requirements are involved.
The ROI Question Is Getting Louder
Digitalization also comes with a difficult financial question: when will the investment pay off?
Current automotive industry trends show that OEMs are under pressure to invest in EVs, AI, cybersecurity, software and new vehicle architectures while also protecting margins. According to S&P Global Ratings, high costs, affordability pressures and slowing sales are creating additional strain for North American automakers in 2026
This makes executives more cautious. Software transformation may be essential for the future, but the upfront costs are significant, and the revenue potential from subscriptions and digital services remains uncertain.
Software Requires a Different Organization
Technology is only part of the problem. Traditional OEMs were built around long product cycles, hardware engineering and carefully defined supplier relationships. Software moves faster. It requires agile development, continuous testing and frequent updates.
That creates tension between engineering, IT and business teams. Deloitte’s research found a significant perception gap: nearly 90% of technical executives believed their organizations were leaders in software-defined vehicle development, compared with only 45% of business executives.
In other words, the digital slowdown is often an organizational problem as much as a technical one.
Market Uncertainty Is Changing Priorities
Another factor shaping automotive industry trends is the changing outlook for electrification and autonomous driving. McKinsey reports that delay in EV platforms can also delay the adoption of advanced vehicle architectures, while slower-than-expected progress in higher-level autonomous driving has shifted investment toward nearer-term opportunities such as ADAS and connected services.
Meanwhile, PwC expects US BEV adoption to remain under pressure because battery-electric vehicles still carry a 15–20% premium over the broader market’s average transaction price.
The Road Ahead
The digitalization slowdown does not mean OEMs are abandoning transformation. It means they are becoming more selective. The winning automakers will likely focus on modernizing core architectures, building stronger software talent and proving the business value of every major digital investment.
The most important of today’s automotive industry trends is clear: OEMs cannot afford to digitalize everything at once. The smarter strategy is to identify where software creates measurable value and accelerate from there.
